With the FIFA World Cup upon us, we couldn’t help but get swept up in the world of soccer!
Soccer – or football as some of the world calls it – is the most popular sport on the planet for a reason. It’s fast, it’s fun and all you really need is a ball and a bit of space. Whether you’re looking to join a local club or just want to join in the games at lunchtime, here’s everything you need to know to hit the pitch with confidence.
The basic rules
The rules of soccer are pretty simple, which is why it’s so easy to love. Two teams of 11 players (though younger teams often play with seven or nine players) try to kick the ball into the other team’s goal. The number one rule is you can’t use your hands! Unless you are the goalkeeper, touching the ball with your hands or arms is a “handball” and results in the ball being given to the opposition team. You can use your feet, chest, knees or even your head to move the ball. Matches are usually split into two halves and the team with the most goals at the end wins.
KNOW YOUR POSITION
Every player on the field has a specific job to do. Where do you see yourself playing?
Goalkeeper: The only player allowed to use their hands (inside the big rectangular “box”). Your job is to stop the ball from crossing the goal line.
Defenders: You stay back to protect your goalie and stop the other team’s attackers from getting close.
Midfielders: These players run the most! They play in the middle of the field, helping the defenders win the ball and passing it up to the attackers to score.
Forwards/Strikers: Your main job is to stay near the opponent’s goal and score! You need to be quick and ready to shoot.
HOW TO GET STARTED
You’ll need a pair of boots for grip on the grass and shin guards. These are super important to protect your legs from accidental kicks! Look for local clubs in your area and head along to an open day… or simply sign up!
3 skills to master
You don’t need to be a pro on day one. Focus on these three basics to build a solid foundation:
- Dribbling. This is moving with the ball while keeping it close to your feet. Try using the inside and outside of your foot. A good tip? Look up sometimes so you don’t run into a defender!
- Passing. Use the inside part of your foot for the best accuracy. Aim for your teammate’s feet so they can control the ball easily.
- The ‘First Touch’. This is how you get the ball from another player. Instead of letting the ball bounce off you, try to cushion it with your foot so it stays right in front of you, ready for your next move.
WHY PLAY
Beyond the goals and the trophies, soccer is about making friends, building confidence, and learning how to work as a team. Every training session teaches you something new — how to pass smarter, run faster, or communicate better with the people around you. It builds your fitness, improves your coordination, and helps you stay focused even when the game gets tough. It’s also just really fun! Whether you’re scoring the winning goal or cheering from the sidelines, soccer gives you that buzzing, excited feeling that makes you want to come back again and again!
