Get ready to return to the ocean! Disney’s much-loved animated movie Moana is being transformed into a live-action adventure! With breathtaking island scenery, exciting action and some familiar faces, it’s set to be one of the biggest movies of the year.
What’s the story?
If you loved the original Moana movie, don’t worry – the heart of the story is staying the same. Moana is a brave teenager from the island of
Motunui who has always felt a special connection to the ocean. When her island and its people are threatened, she sets sail on an unforgettable journey beyond the reef. Along the way she meets the legendary demigod Maui, and together they face giant waves, magical creatures and incredible challenges to restore hope to Moana’s home. It’s a story about courage, believing in yourself and discovering who you’re meant to be.
Meet The Characters
Moana: Moana is curious, determined and fearless. She isn’t afraid to ask questions, challenge traditions or stand up for what she believes is right. Throughout her journey she learns that being a great leader means trusting your heart.
Maui: The larger-than-life demigod Maui is back! Armed with his magical fish hook and a huge sense of humour, Maui is confident, powerful and
sometimes a little cheeky. Even though he and Moana don’t always agree, they become an unforgettable team.
Pua and Hei Hei: Good news for animal lovers, Pua the adorable pig and Hei Hei the hilariously clueless rooster are returning too! Expect plenty of funny moments as they join the adventure.
Moana’s Aussie Connection
One of the most exciting parts of the new movie is meeting the actress bringing Moana to life. Aussie actress Catherine Laga’aia from Sydney has landed her very first major movie role as Moana. She comes from a talented performing family – her dad is actor and singer Jay Laga’aia – but this role is all her own. Catherine says she’s thrilled to step into the role. “I’m really excited to embrace this character because Moana is one of my favourites.” She also hopes the movie will inspire young people everywhere. “I’m honored to have an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me,” she says. Catherine has spoken proudly about her Samoan heritage, sharing that her grandfather is from Fa’aala, Palauli, in Savai’i, and her grandmother is from Leulumoega Tuai on the island of Upolu. She says playing Moana is especially meaningful because it allows her to celebrate her culture on the big screen.
A Familiar Face
Fans will be excited to see Dwayne Johnson back as Maui! After voicing the character in the animated films, he’s returning to play the demigod
in live action. He’s said Maui is a very personal role because it celebrates Polynesian culture and honours his own heritage, making the movie
even more special for him.
